Terrible photo (with my terrible phone) but that's one awesome teacher right there! Melanie Z taught my grade 8's square numbers and square roots this week. She was awesome! So supportive and nurturing. Those kids are going to think I'm a big jerk after having her as a teacher. She was doling out the compliments and the encouragement and the kids were loving it (and her). It was very, very sweet.
Here she is working with some of our most lovely grade 8 students. I believe Elias (at the front) is yelling "get back old man. This new teacher is way better than you" (or something like that). Mind you, this is the same guy that Melanie mistakenly called "Ernie" in the middle of class (which, for some reason, sent me into hysterics) so maybe he isn't totally enamoured with her (as most the other students were).
Nice job MZ! You taught an awesome class. I think EVERY student understood your lesson! Very, very impressive!! I especially like how you said that the exponent shows you how often a number is "going to show up when you multiply". I am definitely stealing that explanation (very clear)!
