This week's Student of the Week is Jordan W!
Look at this well-dressed fellow (on the left!). No surprise Jordan "cleaned up well" for grad. He would often come to class with some stylin' outfits. His footwear game, in particular, was always impressive. Lookin' good, JW! I taught Jordan four years (I think) and he showed BIG improvement over that time. He was NEVER a problem in terms of behaviour but he definitely became a better student (he became a GOOD student!) over my years of teaching him. Jordan is the master of the "late-to-class-arrival". I mean this as a complement. He arrived late PERFECTLY. One second he wasn't there and the next he was sitting attentively in his seat. There was no awkward hang-out at the door (do some teachers actually WANT you to wait at the door?), no stopping to interact with fellow classmates, no disruptive "sorry for being late, Mr. Wadge". You have never seen a more intentional human being than Jordan W on his way to his seat when he arrives late. Head down, eyes focused on the prize, striding to his seat. If anyone had ever gotten in his way, I think he would have wiped them out. Anyway... good work, Jordan. I guess all the practice (many, many lates) paid off! hahaha It was always a shame when Jordan was late because he wasn't able to participate in the daily puzzles. I always liked it when he'd win. He'd never shout out the answer; just state it matter-of-factly. Then, when I spun towards him, shouting "YES!!", he'd have this little grin on his face and would be pointing one finger at me. I loved that. Super cute. Speaking of cute... I can't mention Jordan without mentioning his #1 fan and amazing girlfriend: Maya H. I have had many chats with Maya over the years about her affection for Jordan. It's wonderful to have someone in this world who sees all the GOOD aspects of who you are and Maya is exactly this way for Jordan. Love both these guys and wishing them all the best together! And I have to mention Milkias too. I loved having him and Jordan in my class as individuals. But they were a DREAM together. Helping each other out, asking me questions together, providing work for the other (when one was away. This happened more than a few times. hehehe). Playing cribbage together. And Mastermind. I'll miss them both next year (and I already missed Vahan and Bella this year. Great little group in Foundations 11!). It's been a pleasure to teach you, Jordan. You have ALWAYS been so kind to me, so honest, and so appreciative of any help I ever provided. I know you have the smarts, the sense of humour, and the common sense to do great things in this world. I wish you well and I will definitely miss you next year. Love ya, JW! Ontario’s elementary students will learn how to code starting in Grade 1, add fractions in Grade 5 and carry out financial planning in Grade 6. They will have to recall number facts, and go back to memorizing multiplication tables up to 12 times 12.
The province on Tuesday rolled out a new math curriculum for the fall that comes as standardized test scores have stagnated or fallen, and educators and parents have debated how the subject is being taught in classrooms. |
