Why post it here? Because the guy who had it built / designed is James Stewart, the same guy who wrote our Calculus 12 book (and a LOT of university Calculus books too). He passed away in 2014 and his "Integral House" was put up for sale soon after. I promised that whichever grade 12 student got their name pulled first (from the white bag) would be the first Student of the Week. But then Peter P's name came out first. I know NOTHING about Peter P!! So, with apologies to him (your time will come PP!), we will go with the SECOND name that came out of the bag: this week's Student of the Week is Amir F (anyone got a picture of him that you can send me to include here?)!
I first taught Amir in PreCalculus 10. His start in my class was - shall we say - less than amazing. I remember collecting homework on more than one occasion and Amir looking at me with his wide eyes and nervous smile: "No". I believe there may have been some "forgot workbook" days too. He seemed to be settling into an easy pass (he's a good Math student) but nothing particularly great. But then something happened! I honestly can't remember if it was a conversation with him, or his parent, or maybe it was just luck... but suddenly Amir turned into this incredible student. He started coming in for extra help all the time. He always had his work done on time. He even started working AHEAD at times. Predictably, his marks sky-rocketed. It was such an amazing turn-around. One of the most dramatic improvements within a single year that I have seen in my twenty years of teaching. Way to go Amir! Something else I will always remember about Amir is the great care he displayed for his sister when she started in my grade 8 Math class last year. Amir came in after school, early in the year, to talk to me about Pegah and to request that I contact him if she was ever falling behind / having difficulties. I was so impressed that a grade 11 boy would do such a thing for his younger sister. Although I never sought Amir out (Pegah is a very hard-working and successful student), it made quite an impression on me. I am very pleased to be teaching you again this year, Amir (in Calculus, no less! Hope you are still the great student I remember because it's a tough course!). You were always exceedingly polite and pleasant with me before and I am sure it will be the same this year. Thanks for that! And good luck to you! There's a dab around 0:30 too. I know everyone loves watching dabs. |
