Canadian teachers are always searching for new ways to engage their students. For Doug Downing, a Grade 6 teacher in Edmonton, that means taking his class on regular outings to the racetrack, pool halls and the casino. Although his methods may not sit well with parents, Downing appeared on This is That to defend his actions claiming he is giving his students a "street-wise" education.
"Playing pool can teach a kid so much about geometry," said Downing, "As well, the people in a pool hall can offer the kids insights as to how the world really works."
When asked why he thought it was a good idea to take kids to a casino, Downing responded by saying: "Yes. To bet you need to understand odds, odds are math. It's that simple."
