When I was in grade 5 (or 6?) my first crush was on a lovely girl named Kathleen D. She was very funny, totally cute, and INCREDIBLY smart. I don't think I'm stretching the truth to say that we were the top students in our grade. By the time we got to grade 12, I'd probably fallen to top 10 (hey! there were 800 people in the grad class. So it's not that bad!!) but Kathleen was still right at the top (perhaps tied with one Susan Goto).
Anyway, I went on to become a math teacher but - once again - Kathleen outdid me. She ended up getting her PhD in Mathematics! Now she spends her time studying the mathematics of ocean waves. Recently, this has made her very "in-demand" with various media outlets, wishing to talk to her about the Malaysian airplane crash and the impact of ocean currents on the search.
