This week's Student of the Week is Karen B!
I taught Karen the past two years: last year in Foundations 11 and this year in PreCalculus 11. Plus, she is one of my CS students this year! That's a lot of Karen in a short amount of time. And that's a great thing because Karen is one wonderful person!
Any description of Karen has to include the adjective "soft-spoken". Karen always asks good questions in Math class. It's just that - sometimes - it's difficult to hear what the question IS!! Hehehe! But you have to love Karen's gentleness, her warmth, her generosity.
Having said that, I HAVE seen Karen when she is a little feisty. There is a certain student in my grade 8 class (no names. sorry!) who tends to get under her skin and Karen can get a little blustery and impatient with him. While I don't condone this individual's behaviour, I have to admit that I do kind of enjoy seeing Karen putting him in his place. Don't be fooled by Karen's soft exterior! She's got a tough side too (but it's really cute)!
My favourite thing about Karen is what a good sport she is. I enjoy teasing her and she is always patient (and forgiving) with me. Just yesterday I got the whole class to sing her Happy Birthday and applaud for her, etc. - even though it was not her birthday. She sat there, shaking her head and rolling her eyes. Thanks, Karen, for putting up with my nonsense! And hey, it WAS your birthday this week so HAPPY BELATED B-DAY KB!!
Karen strikes me as being a very good friend. She often brings her friend Summer (or is that you, Rain? Hahaha!) to CS class with her. They obviously just enjoy spending time together. She sits with the incomparable Natasha T in PreCalculus - and they get along famously. She constantly has (high-quality!) friends coming to pick her up from class (Maya M, Marcela P, etc). It's really apparent, with all these girls, how much affection and care they have for one another. It is very, very sweet!
It's been so great getting to know you over the past two years Karen. I love assisting you with your work (you are always so focused and determined... and thankful when we are done) and I love talking with you about "non-math" things too. You have a great heart and a fantastic personality. Thanks for all your help as a CS student and thanks for all your hard work as a Math student. You are awesome in every way, KB!!
