Wow! I actually heard from a few people - Jordan M, Izzy D (no surprise), Blaga I, Will C, anonymous person using "XX" as their name - who honestly READ the list of albums #20 - 11. I'm enthused! I'm motivated! I'm ready to finish the list!! The Shazzy's go to... 10. Perfume Genius - No ShapeMike Hadreas has an amazing voice. It is at once delicate and powerful. And this is his second fantastic album in a row. Great stuff! 9. Father John Misty - Pure ComedyThis guy releases a LOT of music... and most of it is very good. This album - like most of his stuff - is pretty pessimistic, if not cynical. But there is some hope in there, and it all sounds fabulous! 8. Sampha - ProcessThis guy has worked for super-bigshots like Kanye West and Drake, but this album shows he can do beautiful things all on his own. One of the earliest releases of 2017... and one of the best! 7. SZA - CtrlReady for a whole bunch of female R&B artists (there were a few in last week's list too)? I know it seems ludicrous for a goofy, white, middle-aged Math teacher to like this music so much but I can't help it! And there so many great options - like SZA's newest - to choose from! 6. Forest Swords - CompassionIt's hard to describe this music. It kind of sounds like the soundtrack to some epic space exploration movie or something. I had never heard of this guy before but I'll sure be looking out for him now! It's unique, challenging, and exciting! 5. Kalela - Take Me ApartWhy don't artists like this dominate the pop charts. It's catchy but she's also so talented! Here's hoping more people discover and come to love Kalela. 4. The XX - I See YouI've loved these guys for a long time. It's always so satisfying when a band you are a huge fan of releases a new album... and it is amazing. I think I listed to this album more than any other this year. So good! 3. Kehlani - SweetSexySavageOkay - warning! - this album is sort of filthy. Lots of swearing and explicit content. Don't listen if you are easily offended. But the music - the MUSIC!! Kehlani was originally a part of a teenage pop group but she's come a long way since then. As the name of the album suggests, this is sexy stuff! 2. Valerie June - The Order of TimeWhen you first hear Valerie June, you'll probably be taken back by her voice. Is that accent for real? Yep, it is, and it only adds to her authenticity and charm. This album accompanies soul, gospel, country, blues, and folk music. Somehow, it all works. What a unique and beautiful sound! 1. Amber Mark - 3:33am |
