This week's Student of the Week is Simone B.
The greatest compliment I can pay Simone is to say that I knew her for three years before my youngest daughter was born. Confused? Allow me to explain... Naming your own children is a challenge for teachers (as Ms E and Ms Zeller will soon learn), especially after you've taught for a while. There are so many kids (with so many names) you have encountered and they have all left some sort of impression on you. You can't help but associate potential names with some of these students. Who is going to name their child the same name as a kid who consistently gave you attitude? Or was mean to other students? Or who had very little personality at all? I mean you COULD, but how much nicer to have positive associations with the name. And I certainly have great feelings about Simone B! She is confident and intelligent and funny. She is unique and she is true to herself. She is not afraid to speak her mind and she is equally quick to share a laugh (of which I have shared many). I can tell that she is a loyal and thoughtful friend. And I have a sneaking suspicion that she knows more about Enomis than she is letting on (inside joke). I don't think Simone would dispute the fact that Math is not her favourite subject. One thing I have always admired about Simone is that, when she was in my class (and when I was subjecting her to misery in the form of homework and tests) she never let her feelings about Math impact how she treated me. Even on days when she was really struggling or frustrated she was always polite and good-humoured with me. It would have been easy for her to be like "buzz off, jerk" but she never did it even once. I can confidently state that I will ALWAYS remember you, Simone. The first (and, to date, only) "Simone" I have ever taught. You have set a good precedent for the name and I'll try to make sure my daughter lives up to your high standard. Thanks for all the laughs and try to never lose your independent and free-spirited nature. It's what makes you different and it's what makes you WONDERFUL!! |
