This week's Student of the Week is Miu I!
I have taught Miu for the past three years and one thing I have learned is that - though she may be quiet - she is full of surprises! A few examples: (1) the way she interacts with her boyfriend. Of course, everyone knows that Miu and Stefan N are "a couple" and have been, in fact, for a very long time. What you may NOT know, however, is that Miu can be very sarcastic with Stefan. It's so funny to hear her teasing him, putting him down (light-heartedly), putting him in his place (hahaha). Miu has a great sense of humour (and so does Stefan. What a great pair!!). (2) the way she is as a Peer Tutor. When Miu was placed as my Peer Tutor, I was delighted to have her. She is a good Math student, after all. I was worried, however, that she would be reluctant to initiate contact with my grade 9 students (remember how "quiet" she is). Well it turns out that Miu is an AMAZING Peer Tutor. She is always aware of the progress of the students in my class. Even if she is working on her own work simultaneously (which is admirable) Miu is quick to jump up when a student needs assistance. And when she does so she always gets right down to the student's level, gives instruction / asks questions quietly and thoughtfully, and remains with the student until she is certain that they understand. It's truly impressive and has been a HUGE help for me this year. Thanks Miu! (3) the way she is as a student. Sometimes Miu scares me. I will see her in class from time to time doing minimal Math work. Perhaps she is working on another subject (probably Chemistry like everyone else in the class) or chatting quietly with someone. But I have learned by now that you can not gauge Miu's understanding on what you observe in class. Many (many!) times she has far surpassed my expectations on a chapter test. She is a good Math student and - apparently - well aware of how and when to prepare for my silly little tests. Miu, it has been such a pleasure to teach you. Thanks so much for always being so cheerful, friendly, and helpful. One of my favourite things over the past few years were the times that I saw you laughing out loud (LOL!!) in my class. It was never loud (or even noticeable to most people) but your whole face would light up and you had such a look of joy in your eyes. May you never lose that face and experience it often!! All the best to you Miu! I will miss you! |
