Note to self: don't leave phone in classroom when you leave (even if it's just for a few minutes)...30/10/2014 If you know Rohan at all, you'd probably agree with me that he is a quiet guy... VERY QUIET!! Well, you can imagine my surprise when I received an invitation to attend his graduation from his Classical Indian music training. He put on a three hour concert! He was the featured - and ONLY - SINGER! And he was incredible! What a voice! Such a privilege to hear Rohan sing. What a talent! Thanks so much for the invite Rohan. And congratulations! I couldn't stop smiling when you started to sing...
(I'd post a video but I think I should ask Rohan's permission first) You are - and forever will be - #1! I love you dearly and thank you for making my life so awesome these past 17 years!
{And I'll stop there before I get carried away and embarrass you completely...} This week's Student of the Week is Ivana R!
Ivana is a very special Student of the Week. She was one of the first students who ever made me feel welcomed / accepted at King George. She was in my Math 9 class (which I team-taught with the legendary Ms. Massoud - now at Gladstone) during my first year at King George. She was - and IS - extremely kind and personable and I sure appreciated her warmth during those first few weeks of getting comfortable at KG. Ivana spent LOTS of time in my class in grades 10 and 11 (not so much in grade 12 - I think she was too busy). Her and a small group of other students - Yeou Lin, Mia, etc - would come in after school and do homework, watch silly YouTube videos, talk, laugh... It was great fun (and somewhat productive). Ivana also was one of my first CS students. She was a Master-marker and queen of the stickers. All my future CS students have / had big shoes to fill after Ivana's (and Dasha C's) great work in grade 10. Thanks for setting the bar so high IR! Ivana is responsible for most of the Student of the Week photos on the blog so far. She kindly offered to come in to my class (years after she graduated) on a few occasions to take pictures of all the grade 12's. As you can see, she is a talented photographer. Since graduating from KG Ivana has been working (many summers doing summer camps at the W.E.C.C.), travelling, and attending school at Langara. She is now in her first year of the nursing program and (not surprisingly) doing awesome! But the best part of Ivana's post-KG life (in my opinion) is that the two of us have stayed in close contact. Ivana, I am so proud of you for the type of person you are and for the amazing nurse that I know you will be. With your big heart, your sweet disposition, and your great sense of humour, it is the perfect job for you. It was a true pleasure to teach you at King George and it is so awesome that we still see each other (somewhat) regularly. Love you Ivana! Actually, it turns out I'm not too worried. I can't even get the stupid app to work! But - needless to say - no phones on tests / quizzes!! PhotoMath from MicroBLINK on Vimeo. ...so I don't know how this song was released 3 months ago and I only heard it for the first time today. Nice surprise! The guy shown in the video is Arthur Russell, not Sufjan (FYI).
Yellow Narwhal. Kind of cute (kind of!). But not very imposing. And yellow... we all remember how popular (not very) that colour was at the assembly last year. Green Alpaca. This guy has a pretty self-satisfied look on his face. And he really has no good reason to do so. I mean, he's green! And he's an alpaca! Blue ostrich. Now THIS is a noble animal. And that colour! Look at the strong legs. Those gorgeous tail feathers. All hail the mighty ostrich. Red Quokka. Red what?!?!
