It's so easy for these guys to make a tangible difference with others. Wish someone was that excited to shoot hoops (or do math problems) with me!

This is Shawn Mendes, performing today at WE Day... This is what it looked like from where we were sitting... And this is Maya in a somewhat emotional / overwhelmed state as she ogles Shawn Mendes... BONUS: Here's J-Lo (the other J-Lo) who made a surprise appearance right at the end of We Day. We, however, missed her performance as we had already left. Why you ask? Well... uh... guess!
See Ms. Birks if you are interested. She might be able to get you a copy. I bought a copy for my phone for $6.50. I'm liking it so far...
This is Infinite Jest. It WAS going to be the new school bookclub book. But then we realized a few things:
But... it's also considered one of the greatest novels of the past 100 years. I want to read this thing but I know I can't do it alone. So I am challenging dedicated, patient readers to join me in the quest to read Infinite Jest before the end of the school year. So far I know that a few people are taking on this momentous undertaking: Yasmine F Dawn A (way to go girls!! Can't do it without you!!) Anyone else brave (crazy?) enough? Add your name in the Comments below. Maybe we can meet briefly every few weeks and try to figure out what the heck is going on. I'm on page 50 and confused already!! I keep reading how awful sugar is; how it's the "new tobacco" (I'm not saying this is true. I just keep reading it). Anyway, I've decided I'm going to go a while without sugar to see if it impacts my energy level, health, etc. And I (with a tendency to overdo things) have decided to not eat any added sugar until Christmas Eve. Today is Day 4 and so far, so good. No problem.
Want to try something similar? Maybe two months is too long but do you want to try 1 month? 1 week? 1 day? So far a few students have already expressed interest: Hannah R - almost ALWAYS eats like this (way to go Hannah!). Sophie V - I think also eats this way (Yay Sophie!) Paulina C - and Paulina too (Woot! Woot!) Maya M - says she'll try for Christmas Eve! (Nice MM!) Nikolina M - tempted. (Come on NM!) Did I miss anyone? Do you want to join our little challenge? List your name in the Comments below with how long you intend to "play". ROAR points will be awarded! Rules:
Good luck! You / we can do it! This week's Student of the Week is Lu J!
Though it saddens me that I do NOT get to teach Lu this year, my disappointment is tempered by the fact that I still get to at least SEE her from time to time. Lu is in grade 12 this year (she took PreCalculus 11 when she was in grade 11!) and she often drops by to say "hello". Thanks Lu! It's always great to talk to you. Lu is a true delight. She is soft-spoken and polite, hard-working and independent, funny and personable. One of my favourite memories of Lu is when she was my CS student last year. Not surprisingly, she did awesome work for me, saving me lots of time and effort (thanks Lu!). Somehow, my PreCalculus 10 class adopted Lu as their own and there were frequent chants of "Lu's number one! Lu's number one!" throughout the year. Lu was always a good sport about it. But we all know it's true: Lu IS number one! |
