Small but dedicated team this year. Congratulations to Ashra, Elias, Tavares, Brenna, and Marcelo. You all did great!

Let me know THIS WEEK if you are interested in participating. It will cost you $5.
This week's Student of the Week is Nikan N. It is incredible / ironic that I have no picture of Nikan to post here. After all, there have been multiple times over the past few years where I have gone to find a picture on my phone and been met with approximately 128 close-up selfies of Nikan. Gotta watch where I put that phone!!
Anyway, someone send me a photo of the guy (he's probably done the same thing to your phone. Maybe you didn't delete them all like I did... sorry Nikan!). When you've been teaching for more than a few years, the different grad classes can get a little muddled in your head. "Cynthia F? Did she graduate in '08 or '09?" etc. In order to help us out, teachers often refer to each grad class by one specific student. "Cynthia F? Wasn't she in Mario Mandini's grad class?". The one specific student is - for obvious reasons - someone VERY memorable. We are talking BIG personality. Major extrovert. May have caused a few troubles along the way (makes them even more memorable). The first KG grad class I really knew well was five years ago. This was "Dimitri D's grad class" (or maybe Cedomir's). Four years ago it was probably "Momin's grad class" and the year after that was "Moe G and / or Yanal M's class". Last year? Time will tell, but I am betting that it will be "Daniel K's grad class" (though I'd vote for Sophia R's). Which brings us to THIS year's grad class. Who else could it POSSIBLY be? Is there anyone else in the running? Brandon? Grace? Tiana? Good choices, but it HAS to be Nikan. What an incredible personality Nikan has. From grade 8 until now he has hardly changed a bit. Still the good-natured, hilarious, ridiculous, loud, sweet kid he was as a 12 year old. This guy will drive you crazy at times... but you can't help but love him. There's not a mean bone in his body. He displays such affection every time I see him (including lots of physical affection. I have probably been hugged / massaged / squeezed more by Nikan than every other student I have EVER taught COMBINED!!). At last year's KG Staff Party I was the MC and came up with some goodbye words for all the staff leaving our school. There was one teacher (Ms Sanghar's replacement) that I really didn't know well at all (so much so, that I can't even remember her last name right now. Doh!!). I didn't know what to say so I asked some students for quotes. And I got the perfect one!!! Here's how it transpired at the Staff Party: "I would now like to say goodbye to Jill who was at King George for the past few months. Jill, I asked some of your students to provide me with quotes about you and I'd like to read this one out to everybody: - Ms ______, you did a great job as our teacher. I learned lots from you and you were always nice to me. Thanks so much for managing to keep Nikan quiet - Jill, I hardly even know you, but I can say in complete confidence that you are the greatest teacher I have ever met. Anyone who can keep Nikan quiet is nothing short of a master educator" This was - predictably - met with some pretty good laughter from the rest of the staff. But FOND laughter. Very fond laughter. You have made a big impression at our school, Nikan. You are the sort of personality that can not be replaced. I admire you for your love of life, your ability to laugh at yourself, your hard work on the basketball court, and the importance you place on your friendships. It is no wonder that you are such a well-known and beloved member of the King George community. I wish you well and I will miss you next year. |
