This week's Student of the Week is Jasmin O. (thanks to Natasha for the AMAZING photo!!) hehehe I don't have much time to write today (sorry Jasmin) so I am saving time by going LIST format. Here we go: Eight Things All About Jasmin O!!
Still shocked by the sudden death of Prince. Growing up in the 80's, we listened to a lot of goofy, weird, fun music but - to be honest - not a ton that is timeless. You listen to lots of the music from that time and it sounds... uh... dated. But Prince's music holds up. So many incredible songs (and albums). So glad I got to see him in concert. What a performer! Truly one of the most talented artists of the last 40 years. So prolific and so diverse. He spanned genres. He broke rules. He was controversial. He was an iconoclast... and an icon himself. What an incredible life! My two favourite Prince songs: This one is actually one of my all-time favourite songs...by anyone. You already know the original version but check this one out. What a guitarist! Incredible!! Not a Prince song but fast-forward to 3:30. Best ending to a guitar solo ever!! Hilarious! As laptops become smaller and more ubiquitous, and with the advent of tablets, the idea of taking notes by hand just seems old-fashioned to many students today. Typing your notes is faster — which comes in handy when there's a lot of information to take down. But it turns out there are still advantages to doing things the old-fashioned way.
For one thing, research shows that laptops and tablets have a tendency to be distracting — it's so easy to click over to Facebook in that dull lecture. And a study has shown that the fact that you have to be slower when you take notes by hand is what makes it more useful in the long run. "When people type their notes, they have this tendency to try to take verbatim notes and write down as much of the lecture as they can," Mueller tells NPR's Rachel Martin. "The students who were taking longhand notes in our studies were forced to be more selective — because you can't write as fast as you can type. And that extra processing of the material that they were doing benefited them." Members of Mastodon, Queens of the Stone Age, and At the Drive In combine to form Gone is Gone. It's heavy metal and it's awesome! Celebrated new(ish) country singer tackles a Nirvana song. And it's pretty darn great! Colleges in B.C. are not just stepping stones, they offer a way for students to stay closer to home, save money and study in smaller classes, while working toward the same degree they would earn if they went directly to university. Not only that, but it’s easier to get in.
Swimming classes help middle class children boost their maths grades, a study by UCL has revealed. Children who take part in organised sports and physical activities were one and a half times more likely to reach higher than expected grades in their maths test at the end primary school at age 11, it found. Researchers claimed that the sense of achievement children experience while engaging in activities like swimming and dancing motivates them to do well in their academic studies as well.
This week's Student of the Week is Maxwell C.
Maxwell is a pretty quiet and unassuming guy. I've never had a single problem from him (apart from the odd late assignment hahaha) in the three years that I have taught him. However, I have seen times, when certain subjects are discussed (various teachers and their teaching styles, for example) when Maxwell becomes an outspoken and forceful individual. I actually enjoy these rare displays; it definitely shows a different side of Maxwell. Maxwell seems like a deep thinker to me. He seems to ponder things over and come to his own opinions on matters. When he does express his opinion, it is always clear and well-expressed. I have a feeling he must be a good English and / or Social Studies student. One thing I will always remember about Maxwell is... well... his mom! Ms. C came to every parent-teacher interview and always brought me nice gifts. Thanks!! Plus, she took a great interest in Simone because, if I remember correctly, she and her sister are similar ages apart as my two girls. Anyway, she was always very friendly and supportive. Maxwell, one thing I admire about you is that you are very genuine. You are an honest and sincere individual. As the expression goes: you say what you mean and mean what you say. This is a very admirable quality! Thanks for always being so appreciative of my assistance and friendly to me over the past three years. I wish you good luck in the years ahead! |
