My Amazing Dad

My dad died (he made us promise that we wouldn’t say “passed away”) yesterday afternoon. I will never witness a more courageous act in my life. In his final moments he was still laughing and giving us life advice and thinking of everyone but himself. Above is the last family photo that will include my entire family. It was taken within his final hour. I find it awe-inspiring. There is no fear or anger apparent. Only love and joy. How my father managed this sort of bravery, I will never fully comprehend…
 
I want to thank the many, many of you who thought of me, sent me love, sent me strength, cried for me, sent me messages, etc. There were so many teachers who did similar things for me. I feel very blessed to work at King George. I love how we look out for each other and care for one another.

Give your parents an extra hug or two this weekend. I'd do anything to give my dad even just one more squeeze.

Love you dad! Thanks for giving me an amazing life!

This week's Student of the Week is Madison G. (Yet another NON-grade 12! Why must these wonderful grade 10's leave our school? So sad!)

I have taught Madison the past three years and it has been fantastic! When she started in grade 8 she was a low-confidence Math student; always doubting herself and displaying quite a bit of anxiety during tests, etc. But now, she's a strong Math student! She has worked hard, gained confidence, and performs well on every assignment / test.

This is a testament to Madison's determination. She came to see me many times over the years (though not so many times this year), oftentimes with her amazing friend Ali in tow. She'd sit for hours some days, working through assignments / projects with me.  I remember one particular time, where Madison and Ali tried to use subliminal suggestion to will an "annoying student" (to them) out of the class. The other student was completely oblivious (thankfully).

Madison is a hard-working actor and missed many classes for auditions and filming. But she always ensured that she got back on track with her work as quickly as possible (thanks for that, Madison). And now, she is going to further her acting career by moving to the theatre program at Byng (or is it Hamber? I always forget).

Although it pains me to see you leave, Madison, I admire you for making this decision. It must have taken a fair bit of courage and forethought to leave your friends at KG and move to a new school. Good for you for taking a risk! The secret to success in life!!

I wish I had the opportunity to teach you for two more years, Madison, but I am thankful for the three years we had together. Thanks for always being so friendly and kind to me. We have shared some good laughs and good chats. Best of luck to you at your new school next year and come and visit sometime. I will miss you!

Scientists at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia wanted to know if bees could prove their understanding of zero as a quantitative value. The team was surprised to find that the critters can, indeed: The bees could discriminate a value of one from zero with moderate ability, and that success increased when higher values were compared to zero.

This week's Student of the Week is Mohsen M.

What a legacy this guy has put together in just  A SINGLE YEAR at King George! Consider the following accomplishments:
  • member of the KG Cross-Country team (see photo above)
  • scorekeeper for volleyball
  • referee for volleyball
  • coach for Bantam Boys Volleyball (team made the playoffs)
  • scorekeeper for basketball
  • top school mark on the grade 12 Euclid contest
  • tutor for several math students (from KG and from other schools)
  • top mark (to date) in Calculus 12
I am sure I am forgetting (or didn't even KNOW about) another five or six other things. All this, and Mohsen is also super kind, charismatic, and responsible. 

(mind you, he isn't perfect. Did you see the T-shirt he wore last week? PROFANITY!!!!)

I wish you had gone to King George since grade 8, Mohsen. I would love to know what you were like at that age. It's hard to PICTURE you being even somewhat (as most grade 8 boys are) goofy, immature, and loud. But who knows...

Congratulations, Mohsen, on all you have accomplished this year. I respect you so much for the sort of student and - even more - the sort of person you are. I hope you never lose your gentle, easy-going, welcoming disposition. And I KNOW you are going to be successful in whatever field (Physics or otherwise) that you choose to enter. It has been a pleasure to get to know you this year, Mohsen. I wish you well...
