And the drummer is amazing... Oh great. Now I'm going to be obsessed with how well Simone is using a fork, throwing a ball, etc11/9/2015 "I do need math. Maybe not the specifics, but I need to reason my way through problems and solve them mostly on my own. That’s what math does. It trains your brain to use incomplete information to solve a puzzle.
Math is important. Even if your job doesn’t involve a lot of math, it’s important. Math can in some ways inoculate against magical thinking. What seems to be a miracle can reveal itself to be random chance, all with the power of statistics. Even if you never touch another exponential in your life, the reasoning skills you learned in math class will carry over. In law school, I was told that the most desirable candidates were not the political science majors. They were the students who studied math. Why? Because they could look at an argument and take it to its logical conclusion. They could see the weaknesses in legal rationale a mile away. All the facts you can learn about how government and bureaucracy work can change with time. An ability to adapt to new information is invaluable. That’s pure anecdote, of course, but it illustrates something that math doesn’t get a lot of credit for. Math, much like science, is not necessarily a set of facts. The main benefit is that it teaches you how to think." Click the link below for the article... and you'll also find a video by someone who doesn't think Math is so great. Don't watch it for goodness sakes!! |
