Though she graduated last year and is no longer a King George student, and though I only taught her a single time, Alexis definitely deserves to be the first Student of the Week of this school year.
One of the things I love about Alexis is that she is very expressive. When she is happy you can tell from a mile away. She is beaming (amazing smile) and laughing. When she is confused (like with her Math, for example) she doesn't try to hide it. I could always tell from across the room: "Alexis needs my help". It's so refreshing to see someone who doesn't put on a facade, but allows her emotions to be on full view. We should all learn from her example.
Alexis is also expressive in another way: the girl is a dancing machine! I remember when she was in grade 9 (and 10 too?) she was taking dance lessons and let me see some videos of her dancing. In fact, wasn't that part of her MYP project in grade 10? Regardless, the sight of her (and the amazing Sarina S) dancing away always brightened my day. Keep on boogying, Alexis.
As you may know, I usually ride my bike to school. Every now and then, however, I take the bus. I start with the 95 and then switch to the 5. On the latter bus, I often encounter KG students commuting to school. Many of them look shocked or confused (appalled?) to see me and - after a quick hello - bee-line to another part of the bus. But not Alexis (nor her fantastic brother, Ryan). She would always walk right over and sit close enough that we could have a conversation on the way to school. Thanks for doing that, Alexis. It always felt good to share a few words with you in the morning.
So many great reasons to make Alexis the Student of the Week. But there is one more that needs to be mentioned: it is her birthday this week!!! On Thursday to be exact!!
I hope you have a great birthday, Alexis! And a great first-year-after-high-school too. I always loved seeing you around the school (and I love the friends that you surround yourself with). I wish you lots of good luck and success in the future. Take care, Alexis!
