You never know what to expect when it comes to Beck! Depressed to have been a teenager throughout the 80's. Poor me! ...sadly these were my formative years Cyclists in Paris to be allowed to skip some red lights after tests show it will not increase accidents!! C'mon Vancouver. We can do this!!
Of course, this remains the greatest example of all time. For the Olympic Gold Medal... This is why professional cyclists - yes cyclists!! - are the world's most courageous athletes...6/7/2015
If you are a pro cyclist, you WILL crash and you will crash HARD. It's just a matter of time.
Okay, this is actually not (much of) a celebrity. This is just... ME (slightly out of focus, mind you). You should know that by now! Novak Djokovic - #1 tennis player in the world and hero to all Serbs. My neighbour actually congratulates me whenever this guy wins another tennis tournament. Probably the celebrity I am compared to the most often (but learn to tie a tie properly Novak!). Justin Theroux - Mr. Jennifer Aniston. Okay, to be honest, I was only compared to this guy on a single occasion BUT I STRONGLY SUPPORT this comparison. Really hoping that this will catch on! (mind you, I don't like the location of the dimple in his tie. Incredible suit though.) Andrew Bird - underachieving American indie / folk rocker. I don't get this one at all but according to one of my KG colleagues (was it Mr. Scrimshaw? Or maybe it was super-sub Mr. Stapleton?) I look EXACTLY like this guy! Huh? Jim Carey - Canadian actor / comedian / goof-ball. I've gotten this one A LOT over the years as well. I think it may be a combination of the big smile and - well - his / my goofiness. (impressive scarf here) Adam Levine - Maroon 5 dude. A dear student of mine once made this comparison. Afterwards, she tried to backtrack and claim it was due to "the way he acts on The Voice". Nevertheless, I choose to believe the reason is all (good) looks based. Ty Burrell - Phil Dunphy. I think that, again, this may be more the way I act (bad jokes, goofy disposition, rather juvenile) than the way we look. I mean. this guy looks WAAAAY older than me, right? RIGHT????? Bob Saget - ugh! It's the dad from friggin' Full House!! Why? Why? There were a few years (tough years!) in Squamish where a LOT of students commented on how much we look alike. Was this all an elaborate plot to drive me insane? There is nothing - NOTHING - that we have in common!! Is there??!?! Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Bat Man. Apparently my smile is very reminiscent of Jack Nicholson's Joker. I've been told this many times. If this is the case, I really need to cool it on the lip gloss or something. Wlado - as in Where the Heck is He? The Squamish kids use to bug me about this ALL THE TIME. Sadly, I kind of get it. But I haven't had long bangs since grade 10! David Beckham - retired English footballer, underwear model, fashion icon, and Mr. Posh Spice. Okay, to be honest, NOBODY has ever made this comparison but I'm putting it out there for someone to start. C'mon, much like this guy I have bangs that are swept up, a propensity to wearing black, and a couple of wicked tattoos. We are practically twins!! I wasn't going to do a Student of the Week this week (or all summer) but I remembered that Marawan is leaving next year and it inspired me to write something.
So congratulations, Marawan E! You are the Student of the Week. Someone make my day and send me a photo of the guy!! I met Marawan at the start of this year (was this his one and only year at King George?). I believe that we established very quickly that he is Egyptian and that his sister (if I remember correctly) was friends with Sarah A (another Egyptian student who was in my PreCalculus 12 class last year). I remember thinking to myself at the time: "Well, if this guy is even CLOSE to the type of student that Sarah was - determined, polite, friendly, etc - then I would be delighted. Well, it turns out that Marawan is VERY similar to Sarah. He too is a high-achieving, personable and kind student. (In fact, a third Egyptian student I can think of - Yasmine F - is the same! These guys are giving Egyptian students - and parents! - a good name!!) Marawan has a great sense of humour - at least I hope he does! I would often tease him by "ignoring" him when he wanted help ("anybody require assistance? Anybody?") or by feigning disappointment with his results / queries. He was always a very good sport and - hopefully - realized that I only felt safe to bug him because he is such a strong student. I was very disappointed to hear that Marawan was changing to Churchill next year (in order to continue on with IB). I know it was not the easiest of decisions for Marawan to make. To be honest, it was hard (when he asked me for my opinion) not to lie and to tell him: "are you crazy?!? That will look really bad to universities to see you changing schools in grade 11!!". But, in fact, it will likely be a good change for him. Hopefully, Marawan will be happy AND HEALTHY next year at Churchill. The poor guy missed so many days this year due to illness. And when he was sick he looked SICK! Rest up and relax this summer, Marawan. Then you'll be in perfect shape for 2015 - 2016! Thanks, Marawan, for being in my class this year. You always tried your best and your efforts were certainly rewarded. Plus, you provided me with a lot of good questions and great laughs this year. Though our time together was brief I can honestly say that I will miss you next year! Good luck to you! |
