Yesterday, at the grade 8/9 awards assembly, I was announcing the Grade 8 Math contest winners. Both winners (they tied) are in the Tech program... the only grade 8's I don't teach. I started the presentation as follows: "in grade eight, there were two young ladies who tied for the top mark. Congratulations to [XXXX] and to [XXXX]".
Immediately, the whole gym burst into uproarious laughter.
My first thought: "what's all the fuss about? Grade 8's are so loud sometimes..."
My second thought: "why is that boy standing up?"
My third thought: "Oh #%$&^$#"
I have NO IDEA why I said "Young Ladies" when I didn't even know the kids. How stupid is that?
I feel really, really bad about this. And I keep reminding myself: yeah, but the boy probably feels even worse. :(
This young man can come get chocolate from me whenever he wants from now until grade 12...
