I have taught Lara EVERY year since grade. Plus, she was one of my CS students last year. That's a LOT of Lara over the past six years. But it's never enough! She is... and always has been... a complete delight to teach.
One thing I admire about Lara is that she is truly a good sport. I remember in grade 8 and 9 (in the Tech class) there was this ongoing joke that Lara was cheating at everything (was it the puzzles? Kahoot?). Every time she got the answer, almost everyone would start yelling "cheater!" (I may have played along from time to time). It was completely ridiculous (she was not cheating in any way) but it was also pretty funny. However, sometimes I'd think to myself: "this is nuts. Lara is playing along with the joke but what if she finally has enough and loses it. How will I explain to admin that we were all accusing her of cheating". Thanks for being able to laugh at yourself, Lara. And, as my dad always used to say: "we only tease the people we love".
Speaking of love, Lara has so much love for her family. It's amazing to hear her talk about her siblings. It's so obvious that she admires them and loves spending time with them. Hope they are all together during this global pandemic (but I suspect her brother and sister might be back East).
And of course, Lara also has a LOT of love for Riley. That would be her dog (pictured above). As many of you MUST know, I am not exactly a "dog guy" (long live cats!!!). I mean, even Lara must know it. But she always keeps me updated on Riley's progress, Shows me pictures. Tells me stories. And I gotta admit: I've developed a soft spot for that dog. If Lara cares about him (it is a "him" right?!?!?) that much, then I can't help but care a little too.
One of Lara's greatest strengths is her perseverance. Over the past five years, there have been some topics that have given her difficulties (fair enough. There are some tough topics in math). I know she has been disappointed with her progress at times. But she has NEVER given up. Frankly, I am inspired by the way she is able to "put the past in the past" and move on to the new chapter, working just as hard as before. What a great life skill!
Thanks, Lara, for being such a thoughtful and warm-hearted person. It was such a pleasure having you as my CS on my Spare Block last year. We had so much time to chat. You were always interested in sharing your life with me but also asking about what was going on with me. I think you are a truly wonderful person and I wish you and your family nothing but good health and happiness in the months (and years!) ahead. Love you, Lara!
