I'm not even sure if Autumn is aware of this blog / Student of the Week thing, as I did not actually teach her this past year (sob! sob!). But I still like taking the time to say nice things about nice people. And there are so many nice things to say about Autumn!
My favourite memory about Autumn comes from grade 8. A student had seen me at a local restaurant with a young "mystery woman".
"Who was that lady we saw you with yesterday, Mr. Wadge".
"Oh, that was an old student of mine from Squamish. Her name is Alex and she has stayed in touch with me after she graduated. We meet up sometimes to have a drink or go to a concert together (we both LOOOOVE going to concerts)"
Well, this BLEW little grade 8 Autumn's mind. "WHAT!!!! You can do that?!?!? You can have coffee dates with ex-students?!?"
"Sure", I assured her, "why not".
And, without a moment's hesitation, Autumn INSISTED that she and I go out for a drink together when she turns 30. "I mean it. I mean it" she kept repeating.
I believe she has forgotten this little story but I HAVE NOT!! Don't try to weasel out of this Autumn. We are going! Only... what... 12 years to wait??
I was always struck by Autumn's confidence and maturity, even in grade 8. She seems like one of those (rare) teenagers who has a "take me or leave me" sort of attitude. This is who I am. If you like me... GREAT! If you don't... SO BE IT! I'm not changing for anyone! Wish I'd been more like that when I was 13 (and 14, 15, 16...).
Autumn has a great smile and that awesome deep (kind of) laugh of hers. I really admire her laid-back nature, her kindness, and her positive attitude. I remember when we went to Van Dusen Gardens for KG's Big Night Out. It was really cold and there wasn't a TON of things to do. But Autumn and Rachel W. just LOOOOVED it. They even stayed when the rest of us decided to leave. And I'm clear the reason they loved it so much is because of the enthusiasm and positivity that they both exude.
Thanks, Autumn, for being such a sweet student. I always loved teaching you and will really miss seeing you this year (it was hard enough last year when you weren't in my class). At least I know I'll get to see you at least ONE more time. Pencil it in, AD... I'll even pick up the cheque for us both!
Take care!
