This week's Student of the Week is Dhrti C!
Dhrti graduated a few years ago and it is absolutely no surprise to me at all that things are going very well for her since leaving KG. She was always a very engaged and motivated student. I remember when we were in the same French 12 class (yes, I took French 12 a couple years ago). Sometimes Dhrti would sit behind me and all through Ms. Esnault's (excellent) explanations I could hear Dhrti talking quietly to herself: "Yes... right... Ok...etc". Talk about hanging on the teacher's every word. Impressive! I wish I had that kind of focus.
Another thing that really struck me about Dhrti was when a bunch of students in her class were all talking about which Science courses they were taking in grade 12. These were all very strong students. "I'm taking all three", announced a few. "Only Chem and Bio. I'll take Physics in university", said another. And then Dhrti (if I remember correctly): "none".
Everyone else seemed shocked (if not appalled). "None?? Why??"
"Because", Dhrti replied calmly, "my future plans do not involve Science or Business. I'd rather take some other courses that interest me more".
How refreshing! And what a great lesson for all of us: don't pursue things that don't interest you, just to "fit in" or impress others. Do what you love! Follow your heart!
And check it out. Dhrti hasn't changed a bit. Here's what she wrote me just last week: "When I first decided to go to UBC into the Arts Faculty, pretty much everyone thought I was crazy, I kept hearing 'why?', 'what are you going to do with an Arts degree?' Now, I am currently in my third year at UBC, majoring in International Relations (IR) and minoring in Economics and I am so happy with what I'm studying. I can wholeheartedly say that I enjoy what I'm studying which definitely makes studying for exams and writing papers more enjoyable! "

"After my Bachelor's degree, the plan is to go to Law School and possibly specialize in International Law. I have always wanted to make a difference in the world, the plan is to follow a career path and work for an NGO, the Canadian Government in the Department of Foreign Affairs or an International Organization."
Wow! I get goose bumps just reading that plan! Especially because I know that Dhrti is the sort of person who WILL make her plans / dreams come true.
Having said all this about Dhrti, I need to conclude by saying that she is one of the kindest, most thoughtful, and mature students that I have ever encountered. Truly a wonderful student and an amazing person.
Thanks, Dhrti, for all your awesome moments at KG, and continued success to you at UBC! When I think of young people impacting the world in a positive way in the future you are exactly the sort of person I think of.
