I remember when I first met Gareth. Grade 11 (it wasn't grade 10 was it, Gareth?) and I realized right away that he was Dion's younger brother. My first thought: "uh-oh".
Don't get me wrong! I love Dion! Honestly one of the most personable kids I ever taught. So friendly and laid back. Great guy! But... I could never get Dion to focus much on his Math. I always had the impression he was VERY capable but it never seemed to "click". His marks always seemed lower than his ability.
So when Gareth entered my class - seeming even MORE social than Dion! - I was worried that I was in for more imploring / begging / pleading for work from a resistant student. Well... I should remember that NOBODY likes being compared to their older siblings (I shudder at the memory of teachers asking me to "be quieter/ more serious in class... like [my older brother] Jeff").
Gareth has NEVER been a problem. He's an outstanding student. Focused, determined, organized, and a VERY VERY good Math student. I sense that he is one of those people that other students don't realize just HOW WELL he is doing in class. This guy is top-notch!
What makes this even more impressive is the INCREDIBLE number of hours that Gareth has invested in basketball this year (he plays on the Senior Boys team). And what makes THAT so impressive is the fact that Gareth had limited basketball experience until last year and - by the end of this season - was one of the five first-team all-stars in the entire province! What an athlete! And what a testament to the power of hard work!
Of course, Gareth is also extremely personable. He is one of the only people I can still talk to about baseball (once Mr. O'Gorman left there was nobody left!). I always look forward to his warm "hello"s and our informal competition to beat each other wishing "Have a good weekend".
It's been great, Gareth. Keep working hard and I know that BIG things lie ahead of you. I admire you so much for your warm nature, your great sense of humour, and your positive outlook on life. I feel lucky to have met you and taught you. Love ya, G.W.!
